Changes in Attitude as People Grow Older
What other option do parents have in today’s world, where children leave their homeland in quest of greener pastures, than to seek sanctuary in old age homes when they become dependent? Old age homes, in my opinion, are a requirement in this area.
I’m reminded of the fact that far too many elderly people in our nation continue to live in poverty, confront bad stereotypes about ageing, and, worst of all, are subjected to exploitation and abuse, often by their own family members. They are plagued by feelings of loneliness and “empty nest syndrome.” Many people take comfort in their pets; after all, animals are considerably superior to humans.
We used to be proud of our joint family system, the strength of our relationships, and our family connection, but that pride has faded with the passage of time.
We’re too preoccupied to meet even our most basic demands. What has become so important to us in this day and age is our false pride and our daily struggles? When a day isn’t enough for most of us to do our official responsibilities, how can we spend time worrying about someone who is dependent on us for basic or emotional needs, or who is unproductive?
But, dear friends, let me remind you that how a society cherishes and protects its older persons is a true indication of its compassion. Should I say that there should be no justifications for excluding them from our lives for whatever reason? Our senior citizens are not burdens. We cannot abandon our elders on the streets, on the roadways, on the beaches, at temples or places of worship, or in old age homes. Shhhh… Did I mention old age homes? Aren’t they thought to be elderly citizens’ garages or prisons?

Senior citizens must be financially comfortable, take care of their health, and be able to live independently. Expecting love, devotion, care, hormonal interactions with son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws, or living together with children, has become impractical in today’s world. How many old people will be pleased or glad to live with a family who is only interested in obtaining government benefits and money? We should not be afraid to stay in old age homes and acclimate to their surroundings in the company of other inmates. The key to living a happy life is to make adjustments and accept things as they are.
