Ergonomic Furniture Diaries: Some Anecdotes from Work-From-Home Professionals

The unanimous vouch for ergonomic furniture in home-offices stems from the ‘feel-good’ quotient

I usually don’t presume much. I prefer to keep the notions at bay. But being a human being, it’s tough for me or anyone to avoid the preconceived notions. That’s why I couldn’t refrain myself from calling my friends who were confined to home offices during the pandemic lockdown. This time though, the intention was to kill those premature judgments and opinions about the whole concept of working-from-home (WFH). I found the whole idea of home-office a compulsive self-torture, but I didn’t know that ergonomic furniture has been the rescuer of the confidence of many WFH professionals.

A friend of mine is based in Burnley and works for a financial institution. When I rang him up to enquire about his well-being, he said that he was as hale and hearty as ever. When I beseeched him on the travails of WFH, he said: “I never bothered about mental and physical agonies of working from a home-office because I used an ergonomic sit-and-stand desk all the time. Guess what, it’s one of the best mates a working professional can have! I can’t think of working without it now.”

My immediate reaction to his exclamation was ‘raised eyebrows’, but I took his words as truth without even an iota of exaggeration. Then, I dropped a text on WhatsApp to a fellow journalist who cracks the ‘new’ out of breaking news and reports them with chutzpah. She’s based in Sydney, and her response was quite identical to my other friend. “Not even once did my back or spine ache when I edited one news piece after the other. Whenever I felt drained, I rested my head on my ergonomic desk chair’s headrest. I felt, and still feel, super-excited about the happenings at my home-office newsroom.”

Wow, two serious confessions already. Now I could presume without fear that ergonomic furniture is indeed a culmination of physical and mental comfort. Just to strengthen my perception, I finally called a data analyst in Leeds. The man had no tantrums to throw despite having worked for more than eight hours a day from his home-office. “My boss gifted me and other colleagues an ergonomic desk-converter. It’s a perfect example of push-button ergonomics and keeps me fit and smiling all the time. I’m sure you’ll get the same response from my colleagues.”

How do WFH see ergonomic furniture?

From whatever I could gather from my friends’ responses, ergonomic furniture is not just any other piece of office furniture. It’s designed in such a way that it renders a plethora of physical and mental comfort to its users. So, I thought of categorising ergonomic furniture based on how my friends see it. I would like to walk you through those observations.

  1. They say it’s really good for the posture-

I felt an unequivocal endorsement for ergonomic furniture from my friends in the form of its link with good posture. They said that ergonomic furniture such as desk chairs and standing desks took away the slouch from their personas. The newfound posture, they said, catapulted their confidence and productivity to new orbits. Here I would like to add an assertion of my friend from Burnley. He said: “I never enjoyed my work more than ever before.” I feel that this is a statement that should be incorporated by ergonomic furniture companies in their marketing campaigns.

  2. They find it very supportive for the back

The journalist from Sydney said it all. She quipped: “I always need to back the news and opinion pieces with precise facts. And for that I need a back that never aches. My ergonomic chair helps me in getting the back of a journalist.” Now I presume, rather assert that with ergonomic furniture you’re likely to get your epiphany. I personally agree to the observation that a good and ache-free back is what defines a seasoned campaigner. Ergonomic furniture such as desk chairs give that quintessential lumbar -lower back- support that you need in-order to compete with the world.

  3. They say that it’s mood uplifting
From Burnley to Leeds, and across the continents to Sydney, ergonomic furniture such as standing desks and office chairs are viewed as mood uplifters. The words uttered by my friend in Burnley resonate in my ears here in Birmingham. He said: “My standing desk is white-legged with a gray top. The hue merges with my workplace interiors. It feels so good to work with this standing desk. Its ergonomics continue to amaze me.” And the vibes from Leeds and Sydney were very much in tune with these sentiments. The lady from Sydney loves her ergonomic desk chair not only for the comfort quotient, but also the aesthetic appeal. “The leather cushions are simply gorgeous,” she feels.
  4. They feel more efficient and productive at work

I wish I could interpret the enthusiasm with which my friends talked to me about the efficiency and productivity that ergonomic furniture adds to their lives. They said that physical comfort coupled with mental bliss is all that a professional needs to be more productive. Now I will stop presuming. I am saying this with the confidence of an unbiased journalist that you and I need ergonomic furniture to prove our mettle at the professional front. I’d like to revisit the point made by my friend in Burnley. “Guess what, it’s one of the best mates a working professional can have! I can’t think of working without it now,” he stated.

Conclusion

After talking to my friends, I concluded that working in a home-office is nothing to worry about at all if you have good ergonomic furniture as your companion. Whoever envisages WFH without agony, should buy it. I’m going to book an ergonomic chair for myself. Why don’t you also?
